MEET THE MAKER- Benchspace: Instrument Maker Brian Leach
Join Benchspace’s Maker Brian Leach as he gives us an insight into the beautiful world of all things musical.
Brian is a musical instrument maker from Cork. He made his first electric guitar with his father in 2006. With a keen interest in music he performed with many different bands, playing styles including Rock, Jazz, and Trad throughout the years.
In 2015 he started to take instrument building seriously and enrolled in a 2 year full time course. After that he started Cork Guitars, a stringed instrument repair shop. In recent years his passion for Uilleann Pipes has taken over and he has been experimenting with making this illustrious, enigmatic instrument.
With a degree in Physics and a Masters in Music Technology he looks at instrument building differently to some traditional makers “I’m always pushing things forward, even incorporating electronics into places they might not belong. Sound is everything to me, and to make a new and interesting sound is my goal. The artistic side of it fascinates me, as well as the hand craft side.”
In this video Brian shows some of the tools and techniques he uses when boring and reaming Uilleann Pipe drones. Using these techniques he successfully made a set of Uilleann Pipe drones and a regulator in Benchspace in 2019/20.
