As we continue traipsing through October we are delighted to share with you our New Cork Craft & Design October Makers. This month we are bringing you creators who specialise in Ceramics, Textiles, Glass, Jewellery & Print.
Brendan Ryan is a ceramicist who after many years working in different careers, returned to college to
study art in Crawford College of Art and Design. There, he discovered his passion for ceramics. In 2018 Brendan worked in the International Ceramic Studios, Kecskemet, Hungary. He has hand built and thrown his forms and by using lines and marks, he explores the qualities of this landscape and his connection to it. Brendan works from his home studio in Whitechurch Co Cork.
Orla O’ Rourke is the creator behind Stable Door Pottery which first opened in 2005 in Dunmanway. Since then Orla has opened another studio in Shanagarry and Lisgoold. Cork with its inspirational scenery is the base for all of her work. Everything is handmade with great care and detail showcasing Ireland’s natural beauty through ceramics.
Aleks Designs which is based in West Cork, takes inspiration from the beautiful natural Irish landscape. Aleksandra creates stylish, timeless and quality felt fashion accessories. She uses the highest quality materials, such as Australian merino wool, silk, and natural fibres. Her contemporary collections are distinguished by their rich mixture of colours and materials and textures.
Gaby Aubin joins us on the shop floor under the name Grange Glass. Gaby is trained as a stained glass artist living and working in West Cork. She makes her pieces from original designs which are influenced by nature and local fauna. Gaby prefers to work with copper foil which allows for finer detail and inclusion of many different colours and textures of glass in a given piece.
Hannah McGrenera beautiful work under Saw Framed materialised in November 2019 when she combined her love ink drawings and jewellery. Her creations are a celebration of differences and uniqueness. All her jewellery is hand made in my workshop in Bealnablath Co. Cork with 925 sterling silver. She hopes her creations may enhance a part of your fun loving life or/and brightens up your day.
Jill Cotter is the creator of CorkIDoodleDo. Jill lives with her family up on top of a hill between Monkstown and Passage. Between school runs she can be found in her studio under heaps of paper and markers, delighted and grateful to be there. Her prints are presented, on 310 gsm paper, in Irish-made, solid wooden frames. The intention of her work is to strengthen your connections with the places you love.
Jim Turner creates beautiful ceramics in West Cork where he is sharing a studio with Etain Hickey. A former part-time lecturer on sculpture and ceramics in Rossa College, (Cork College of Commerce Campus), Skibbereen. An award winner of the Crafts Council of Ireland ‘Excellence in Making’ award and the Irish Contemporary Ceramics Award, his work is in many collections, including the Crafts Council of Ireland and the Office of Public Works. Etain Hickey, Jim’s wife has decorated the work that is on the shop floor.
